Amy Winehouse — Her Life, Death and Legacy

Though her sudden death was a tragic loss, the life and legacy of Amy Winehouse will continue to live on through her soulful voice, talent and music.

From her soulful music to her striking look, artist Amy Winehouse reached many through her deep voice and popular songs. She gained widespread fame from some of her hit singles like “Rehab” and cover of “Valerie”. Though it was known that she struggled with drug issues and problems, many believed that Amy Winehouse was a new, soulful singer with a great talent and even greater prospects in the music industry. It was thus a sudden and tragic shock to the world when people discovered that Amy Winehouse was found and later declared dead in her apartment in late July of 2011. Although the life of this artist may have been sadly cut short, her legacy will continue to live on through her soulful music and songs.

Early Life and Biography of Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse was born in 1983 to a modest family in the northern part of London, England. Even from a young age, the talented artist enjoyed participating in singing recitals and other music events. After Amy Winehouse’s parents had a divorce when she was nine, she spent most of her time with her mother in the London suburb, Southgate. Southgate was home to a celebrity rehab center, which may have later influenced her hit single, “Rehab”. Though a good kid, Amy Winehouse displayed her rebellious side and unique attitude as well, even getting expelled from her theatre school. In fact, according to Amy Winehouse’s father, says People, “[She was] not badly behaved… but different”.

Amy Winehouse’s Rise to Fame in the Music Industry

From her soulful singing voice to dark good looks, the artist with untapped talent was signed a record deal with Island Records. Amy Winehouse began her road to fame in 2003 with her platinum selling music album, Frank. Her unique and jazzy voice style was first heard here by a widespread audience. Amy Winehouse also influenced the fashion world with her signature beehive black hair and heavy eye makeup. With the selling of her most famous album, Back to Black (and her smash hit “Rehab”), Amy Winehouse became even more respected and well-known as a new, soulful artist. After being rushed to a hospital in 2007, it was revealed that Amy Winehouse had an overdose on drugs and may have had longstanding drug problems.

Amy Winehouse’s struggle with drugs continued to her sudden and tragic death in her apartment in July of 2011. The day was not only a great loss for music everywhere, but for many people and fans as well. According to Mark Ronson, her music record’s producer, says BBC, “She was my musical soulmate and like a sister to me. This is one of the saddest days of my life”. Despite her continued struggle with drug use, Amy Winehouse certainly left her mark on the music world (and her fans) with her soulful voice, deep songs and great music style. Hopefully, people will remember Amy Winehouse as a talented artist with a legacy in life whose songs like “Rehab” and “Valerie” will remain around for generations past her death.
